Club History

imgOriginally designed by Donald Ross and built in 1923, Manchester Country Club was conceived by members of the neighboring 9-hole Intervale Country Club who seceded to form the 18-hole golf course at Manchester Country Club. Leading course architects Walter Stiles and Donald Ross competed for the business of course design, but legendary Ross won out. He participated in both the selection of the land, the design and construction of MCC’s golf course. Of the more than 400 courses designed by Ross, less than one-third were actually viewed by Ross before opening. MCC was one of those few, with an official opening and ceremonial competition on August 1, 1923.

Always hailed a “Ross Masterpiece,” MCC later faced tough times in 1945 when it went bankrupt, and ownership transferred to a group of New Hampshire businesses. These “Manchester Associates” leased the Club back to the membership for the next 50 years.

imgIn 2002, the membership reacquired MCC and continuing through today, 340 Full Golf Certificate Holders currently share in the current and future stability of the Club.

In 2007, the membership embarked on a Golf Course Long-Range Improvement Planning (LRIP), which blends the historical restoration of the “Ross Masterpiece” with today’s playability. The LRIP has already proved successful and continues to add value to members’ golf and social experiences.

In 2009, the Board of Directors engaged in a management contract with Arizona-based upscale golf management company, Troon Golf. “They will add a layer of expertise and resources we didn’t have before,” then-club President Ian MacDermott said. “We’re looking to better the quality of service to our members and potential members.” The Club remains member-owned and governed by the member-elected Board of Directors.
